Preparing for Mediation
Preparing for Mediation
Coming to mediation prepared helps the process go more smoothly and gives you the best chance of reaching a resolution that works for everyone involved.
Know your goals. Before your session, take time to think about what you most want to accomplish and what you're willing to compromise on. Understanding your priorities ahead of time helps you participate more effectively.
Gather relevant documents. Depending on your situation, this might include financial records, contracts, correspondence, or other materials that support your position or help tell your story.
Be ready to listen. Mediation is a two-way process. Coming in open to hearing the other party's perspective, even if you disagree, makes productive dialogue possible.
Bring a support person if needed. In some cases, you may want an attorney, advocate, or trusted person present. Check with your mediator in advance about whether this is appropriate for your session.
Expect the unexpected. Mediation often surfaces information or perspectives you hadn't considered. Flexibility is one of the most valuable things you can bring to the table.
